for his lasting contribution to Norwegian mining in bringing the Engebø rutile (titanium) and garnet deposit into production. Projects, such as Engebø, are important show cases for the future development of mining projects in the entire Nordic region.
Ivar Fossum is an important mover in the Norwegian mineral industry, and his deep knowledge and professionalism is a beacon to be followed.
The Award was presented to Ivar Fossum during the Autumn Summit organised by Svemin (The Swedish Association for Mines, Mineral and Metal Producers) held in Stockholm on November 19th.
The Nordic Exploration Award is presented to recognise and honour outstanding achievement, accomplishment and service to the Nordic exploration industry. It was set up in 2006 by Magnus Ericsson of the Raw Materials Group now RMG Consulting. The Award is particularly intended to stimulate the interest and confidence of the general public in the exploration sector and to increase the general awareness of the importance of mineral exploration. Award winners are selected by an independent Award Committee with international members following a nomination procedure. Individuals, companies or groups of individuals of any nationality are eligible for nominations to the Award Committee.
The Award Committee consists of the following members:
Danel Larsson /Sweden), Timo Lindberg (Finland), Henrik Stendal (Denmark/Greenland), Jan Sverre Sandstad (Norway).
Ivar Sund Fossum has served as CEO for Nordic Mining ASA since the company was founded in 2006. He has previously held various positions in Hydro, within the oil and gas and the fertilizer industry. Ivar also served as General Manager of Norsk Hydro East Africa Ltd, and currently serves on the board of the Norwegian mining association, Norsk Bergindustri. Ivar holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.
Ivar is best known for his engagement and leadership in the development of the Engebø rutile and garnet deposit on the west coast of Norway. The project is novel in terms of exploiting rutile from a hard rock resource. Nordic Mining acquired the Engebø project from ConocoPhillips in 2006, and for 18 years Ivar has been in charge of bringing the project into production. Construction is on-going and production will commence before the end of 2024. The Engebø mine is the first new operating metal mine in Norway for 35 years, and the production will increase the significance of Norway as a substantial global supplier of titanium minerals. Numerous have been the challenges and impact assessments on the way, but Ivar has shown an admirable stamina and belief in the project. Vital achievements include making garnet a saleable product, and considerably reducing the volume of waste rock.
